Men’s Health Week 9th to 15th June 2025

We’ve used this year’s “Men’s Health Week” as a starting point for us to engage with health providers to gain insights into keeping ourselves well and healthy and as a timely reminder to make sure our Shed first-aid facilities are up to scratch.

This week we had a visit from Marthy Cloake from the South Canterbury Branch of the Heart Foundation to talk to us about keeping our hearts and arteries healthy, what to do if we, or another Shed member, shows signs of heart related illness and the importance of regularly monitoring our blood pressure. Before leaving us, Marthy did some on the spot blood pressure testing of the Sheddies on site and offered the opportunity for members to visit her at her office if they preferred to.

This is part of a series of visits from health educators and providers we have planned at the Shed over the coming months. Our next session will be on the 24th June when we will have a visit from Rosie Chambers of the Alzheimers Society.

Forklift Project 2024/25

Following a successful bid to the Mid and South Canterbury Trust we were awarded a $10,000 grant towards the cost of replacement of our Shed forklift. In addition to the purchase of the forklift, we have undertaken training and operator certification of a number of our Shed members to ensure the safe and correct operation of the forklift. The new machine is better equipped and more efficient than the machine it replaced and further benefits from lower engine and noise emissions.

We gratefully acknowledge the Mid and South Canterbury Community Trust for allocating grant funding for this project and to MH Equipment Supplies Ltd for helping us to source a suitable machine. Our thanks also to Mainland Driving School Ltd for providing our operator training and testing and to Gallagher Insurance for the provision of insurance cover for the machine.
